WEEK 3 PRACTICUM 18/9 - 23/9

Assalamualaikum and what’s up guys. Thanks again for coming back to read my practicum journal. I hope you readers take care of yourselves, nowadays it is raining a lot and many people are getting sick. Moving on from the greetings, currently is week 3 of my practicum and my emotions right now are just neutral. This week is quite special since there’s one thing that I think stands out the most which is programmes. What kind of programmes? Not telling until later.๐Ÿ˜

The week starts with an assembly on Monday morning, under the beautiful sky with voices of children getting in line and teachers gathering at the school grounds. The assembly on that day was different than usual, some children were seen wearing clothes that were themed on Independence Day. A sudden thought came to mind, the closing ceremony of the month of Independence held together with the assembly. A fashion competition was held, participated by students from mainstream and Program Pendidikan Khas Integrasi (PPKI) consisting of around 150 students. All of the students were very handsome and beautiful, some wore traditional clothes and most wore their own designed clothes. From 150 students, only 5 students were chosen as the top 5 and another 45 students received a consolation prize. It was a wonderful moment for the school and for myself as well.

Moving on, the class that I had on Monday with 4 Kenanga had to be postponed due to the closing ceremony of the month of Independence. I only entered the classroom just to take attendance. Some students were absent and their reasons are well, I do not know. Later that day, I focused on completing my lesson plan, weekly journal and went to relief a class.

On Tuesday, I was given the materials to teach 4 Kenanga by my mentor which is to do a literature review exercise with them. When I came into the classroom, I noticed that the students were not in the mood to learn since they just got back from recess. I tried my best to grab their attention by having them share what they remember about the story ‘King of Kites’. Some of them answered while the rest were quiet. Due to that, I made a group reward chart on the whiteboard, which was a success in grabbing their attention. After that, I distributed worksheets to the students and discussed the answers with them. The worksheet that I gave to the students was quite easy which is a word search exercise. From the students' faces, I noticed that they had a great time. I just have to find more engaging activities to do with them.

In the evening of that day, there was a meeting about the programmes that will be held on Saturday, 23/09/2023. There were four programmes that will be conducted at the same time on that day. The programmes are ‘Kem Kepimpinan, Kem Bestari, Gotong-Royong Madani’ and birthday celebration for the teachers born from June until September. I was chosen to be the photographer with Cikgu Samsor for ‘Kem Kepimpinan’. There were a lot of discussions regarding the programmes venue if it rains, the audio system, and food. The experience that I had in the meeting was something new because I observed how the teachers conducted a meeting, how to give suggestions, and the discussion regarding the issues.

Next, the classes that I had on Wednesday and Thursday for 3 Dahlia were still on topic 07 ‘Out and About’. I taught the students about plural nouns (regular and irregular nouns). I had them read a story from the textbook and I corrected the students’ pronunciation when it was necessary. Additionally, I prepared worksheets for the students so that I could know whether they understood or not.

The co-curriculum activity for the week was clubs and associations. I was assigned to the English club. There were many students who didn’t attend the co-curriculum, especially year 6 students. The reason was they had to go to Islamic school to prepare for an exam. So, the students that came to the English Society club were around 20 students. The person in charge of the activity for the English club on that day was teacher Nadia. She conducted a game which is called ‘Writing Round Robbin’. There were three groups consisting of 7 students each but the last group consisted of 6 students. The game requires the students to write a sentence each to create a story according to the genre given. But there is a catch, the students are not allowed to read other students' sentences. They have to write anything on the paper. The stories from each group after combining everyone’s sentences were totally funny and so random. There were two groups that wrote about Spiderman and Superman in their story which was so random and amusing. The objective of the game was to show that the students can write, read, listen, and speak in English. It was a way of giving the students motivation that they could learn and become proficient in English. Truly a teacher’s dedication to sharing knowledge whether it is small or big can’t be measured.

My Friday was just the same as the previous weeks, went to relief a class and submitted my lesson plan to the headmaster. That’s all for Friday.

Now, on to the highlight of the week, Saturday’s programmes. YAYYY…. Ahem, let’s get back to the journal. I went to school early at 7.30 in the morning, signed my attendance at the registration booth, and helped a teacher distribute snacks to the students. Around 148 students came and signed their attendance for ‘Kem Kepimpinan’. For this programme, all the activities and modules are conducted by consultants from Wirajaya. The teachers assigned to this programme including me just observed the students in turns.

Registration booth

The event started with the opening ceremony which then continued to the first module. The first module was about appearances of oneself at school. It was quite long and a little bit boring for me but for the students, I don’t know. The students just sat down, listened, and wrote down all the information that was shared with them.

Around 10 – 10.30 in the morning, the students had their breakfast at the canteen. The food was provided by the catering service. After that, the students continued with the next module. In this module, the students are divided into their respective roles such as prefect, library prefect, PRS, SPBT, class monitor, and vice class monitor. In their own units, the students do activities with the consultants related to their respective roles.

Fast-forward to the ending ceremony, the time was already 5.00 in the evening, and for real guys, I was totally tired and sweating and all the stuff.๐Ÿ’ค Even after the event ended, I still stayed to help clean the venue. It was a one-of-a-kind experience where I went through the whole event from the beginning till the end through the eyes of a teacher. Usually, I was the participant but now it’s the opposite.

Finally, the summary for the whole week in one sentence is experience teaches us new things. People learn and grow through mistakes and experiences, not from staying in their comfort zone. The same thing applies to teaching the students. I can say that my teaching skills, compared to the IPG students are like the sky and earth. But I learned that you can’t compare yourself with other people. Different people, different experiences. The only thing that we can compare is us from the past. How far have I improved, is there any progress. I always observe the IPG students on how they do their materials. Anything that’s good, I take it, and anything that’s the opposite, I improve it. I’d like to end my journal with a quote “There are no bad students, only bad teachers”.

Goodbye and thank you to my readers.๐Ÿ˜„
